How do I care for my sterling silver jewellery?

When it comes to Sterling Silver jewellery it is always best to avoid wearing it in water.

Ensure you keep Sterling Silver away from swimming pools and spas, as chlorine can damage your jewellery in a very short time.

This is most important with regards to stone sets and in particular crystal set jewellery.

With Crystal pieces they are set in with a specialised glue that does not react well with water or everyday “chemicals” such as shampoos or perfume.

So to ensure longevity this Jewellery is best for occasional wear and will need to be treated with care.

What is sterling silver?

Although it might seem “pure” Silver would be the most desirable, it's not actually the case.

The official designation of “Sterling” to a piece of Silver indicates that it contains at least 92.5% of pure Silver. The remaining 7.5% comprises of other metal alloys, most commonly copper.

Metal alloys with a Silver content of more than 92.5% are too pliable to be used without suffering from dents and damage.

To ensure the metal’s stability and resilience, the second alloy is required. Giving you a durable wear with your jewellery!

Will my sterling silver tarnish?

Yes, sterling silver tarnishes over time. Tarnish is a chemical reaction that occurs when silver is exposed to sulfur-containing gases, such as those found in the air, water, and some substances. The reaction produces a silver sulfide compound that coats the metal with a thin, black film

Here's some tips on how you can avoid tarnish!

  • Store sterling silver in a cool, dark place away from sunlight, moisture, and heat.
  • Avoid wearing sterling silver when showering, bathing, or swimming.
  • Wipe down your jewellery after wearing it.
  • Rinse and dry your jewellery thoroughly after cleaning it.
  • Wear your sterling silver jewellery frequently to allow the natural oils in your skin to act as a protective barrier.
